History:

Remer Township, and the earlier Remer post office and railway village, were named in honor of E. N. and William P. Remer, brothers, of whom the former was treasurer and manager of the Reishus-Remer Land Company of Grand Rapids, and the latter was the first postmaster here. The city of Remer, sections 1 and 2, was incorporated as a village on January 12, 1912, and separated from the township on June 23, 1914. The post office began in 1904, along with a sawmill and several stores, and a station of the Soo Line Railroad.

This book is a collection of stories about rural independent pharmacists and the contributions they have made to their towns.

Chapter one is a story about Remer Pharmacy. The story begins with Felix Pronovost, 1916, owner of the first drug store in Remer, Minnesota and ends with Ray Kral, RPh, 1996. Only two pharmacists have provided the citizens of Remer, Minnesota with pharmacy services since 1916. Their contributions are significant and yet immeasurable.

The Chippewa was the first National Forest established east of the Mississippi. The Forest boundary encompasses 1.6 million acres, of which over 666,325 acres are managed by the USDA Forest Service. Aspen, birch, pines, balsam fir and maples blanket the uplands. Water is abundant, with over 1300 lakes, 923 miles of rivers and streams, and 400,000 acres of wetlands.
Soo Line North ATV Trail
The Soo Line North ATV Trail is a 112 mile trail running through Carlton, Aitkin and Cass Counties. The trail consists of three main sections: from Moose Lake to Lawler, from Lawler to Shovel Lake, from Shovel Lake to Cass Lake. The portion from Shovel Lake to Cass Lake is mostly forested with several large bogs. Portions of the trail run through Savanna State Forest, Bowstring State Forest, and Chippewa National Forest.

Cedar Beach is located on the north shore of beautiful Thunder Lake between the towns of Remer and Longville Minnesota. Our cottages are nestled on 13 1/2 acres of nicely wooded land. Thunder Lake is a clear lake with a clarity of twenty one feet. The Lake consists of 1,330 acres and 36 miles of scenic shoreline. The lake depth varies to a maximum depth of 95 feet. There are two islands in the lake as well as 5 protected bays for great fishing. Thunder Lake is known for its walleye, northern pike, large/small mouth bass and pan fish.

Remer is about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids, about 20 miles east of Leech Lake, or about a three hour drive from Minneapolis. At Cedar Point Resort you have the choice of seven lakeside, dock level housekeeping cabins, each with a private dock. A boat ramp is also available. Little Sand Group Homes is a non-profit (501 C3) organization operating three group homes since 1976, serving adolescent females ranging in ages from eleven to seventeen. Little Sand is located in Remer and has a capacity of 28 residents. We serve clients from the entire state of Minnesota. Our residents are referred to us for help in dealing with many different issues. Usually, our residents have been the victims of abuse, neglect, or have experienced other types of trauma in their lives. We provide a safe, nurturing environment for our clients. Services in our program are delivered to our clients by a professional staff of 24. It is our goal to assist each resident to work through the issues that resulted in their placement, in addition to helping them learn more effective coping skills and appropriate behaviors, while increasing their self esteem. Our rural setting on beautiful Little Sand Lake and Willow River, coupled with spacious, yet warm and comfortable homes, creates an atmosphere perfect for dealing with issues facing the female adolescent.
