SWAN RIVER, a community on the Sago and Wawina Township border, is named for the river near it, which flows from Swan Lake. This is a translation of the Ojibwe name, Wabiziwi, noted by Gilfillan. It was first settled in 1889 but never organized as a village; it had four locations and sites within Sago Township: Old Swan River, 1889-91; Swan River Junction, 1892-99; East Swan River, 1900-40; and West Swan River, 1941-present. Its post office in section 18 of Wawina Township began in 1890; it had stations in Sago Township of the Duluth, Mississippi River and Northern Railroad in section 7 and of the Great Northern Railway in section 12.
